Dunnings Spring Decorah, Iowa-summer time lapse

My return trip to Decorah, Iowa was timed as perfectly as the last visit in April, pouring rain. This time is was quite humid causing the cold water of the spring to breathe out a fog and mist. When I first caught site of the falls I was stunned by the mythical vision in front of me. So I hurried to quickly capture the scene before it disappeared. As good of luck as a photographer could have, the fog and mist continued to stay throughout my whole 4+ hours I spent at the falls. I had to take one break as the rain and thunder began to come down quite hard. There were a few other visitors to the falls and the looks on their faces were priceless as well.

Thomson Reservoir, Carlton County Minnesota

This is not the kind of waterfall I am normally motivated to capture, but each time I drove into Jay Cooke Park, I stopped and marveled at all of the different falls and cascades below the dam. On my last time at the park, I stopped by to shoot some stock clips of the dam and ended up shooting for a video instead. The reservoir is almost surrounded with private property signs and fencing making it tough to get to some of the angles I wanted but could not get to. During the flood two years earlier any place I stood that day had been completely under water.

Jay Cooke State Park (part 4)

On fourth visit to Jay Cooke State Park I headed to the Oldenburg Overlook. I knew there had been some major damage to the park during the flood two years ago, but I never realized how bad it had been. There were whole hillsides completely gone taking the trails to the river with them. You can see some of the damage from the landslides in the video by looking for the open ground on the hillsides. I did manage to climb down a muddy embankment to get some close shots of the rocky riverbed, losing a shoe twice due to the mud.

Jay Cooke State Park (part 3)

In Jay Cooke State Park, the north channel around the island of the St Louis River is a beautiful series of waterfalls with a very large one as the final drop. My first trip I attempted to capture it but was horribly rained out that time. This time I have a pretty decent weather although the potential rain clouds were causing issues with my white balance again. I had just finished my final set, was packed and ready to go when the rain instantly came down in buckets. As usual I smiled as I opened my umbrella and calmly walked down the trail making room for all the running wet hikers. And that's one of the reasons why I always carry an umbrella on my hikes.

Jay Cooke State Park-Carlton County, Minnesota (part two)

I was so impressed with Jay Cooke State Park, I decided to return the following weekend and continue capturing the great waterfalls they have in the park. This time I am down river just below the famous swing bridge. There is a series of very large angled rocks creating huge cascades as the St Louis River flows towards Lake Superior.

Jay Cooke State Park-Carlton County, Minnesota (part one)

Jay Cooke Park is located in Carlton County Minnesota, just south of Duluth. I have never visited the park before but was told I needed to see the park. It was a rainy Sunday morning drive to the park and as I was driving along the St Louis River, the scenery was peaking my interests. The swing bridge is one of the main attractions in the park as it crosses the river to better hiking trails to see the river waterfalls. Most there are high rapids with some decent drops on the north channel around the island. That is where this video concentrates. There is a beautiful drop on the south side that you can see as a teaser in the end of the video. More of the park to come soon!

Caribou Falls North Shore, Minnesota

According to the weather forecast, by the time I made it up to Caribou Falls it would be cloudy. Nope, sunny with occasion clouds popping in and out of my shooting time. It was the 4th of July and there were plenty of people hitting the hiking trails. I have been to Caribou Falls back in the 80's and I do not recall whether there were stairs leading down to the  base of the falls or not. This time there were stairs and a well maintained path. This is large waterfall in a very deep gorge, but it is worth the hike.
